Bah Humbug! meaning – sharing sarcasm or spreading cheer?

Bah Humbug! meaningBah Humbug!

So you’ve probably heard the expression Bah Humbug!, especially this time of year as Christmas approaches.  In simple terms it is basically a phrase to display rejection or disapproval of a popular event.  The term has become quite a popular response to any negative reaction regarding the holiday season.

…Where did it come from?

If you’ve ever watched the movie “A Christmas Carol” you will likely remember the famous line from Ebenezer Scrooge.  While this may not be the first ever use of the phrase, it is certainly what comes to mind for a lot of people when they hear the line.  Scrooge was not a fan of Christmas and the line has made itself famous when presented with similar attitudes toward the holiday.  This phrase has even become quite popular on merchandise and cards in a more comical way.

I have never heard of that saying before, what country did it originate from. I stay in south Africa and not once have I heard of it. Maybe people don’t know about it. I will start saying it here in South Africa. Hopefully I can be a trendsetter haha. I will be sure to let you know how that goes

      Hi Daniel,

I believe the movie was based on England.  Happy to hear the expression will be making its way into South Africa!
