Where do Polar Bears live now?
Where do Polar Bears live?
So you’ve seen them in movies and winter clothing wear advertisements but still want to know where do polar bears actually live?!
While it seems logical that they would live in any cold environment polar bears actually only really live in the Arctic (or near the “North Pole”). They inhabit several countries, but the majority of their population can be found in the northern areas of Canada. They generally require both land and Ice (on a body of water) to survive and hunt. There are several other bear species that can survive further down into Canada’s more populated land. Some species are often seen up in “cottage country”, but not every bear is the great “polar bear”. This magnificent beast does not tend to inhabit cottage country.
The classic polar bear and penguin scene
It isn’t uncommon to see polar bears and penguins in the same movie but they don’t actually tend to cross paths as the Arctic and Antarctic, or North and South Pole, are geographically no where near each other! Never the less, we enjoy those scenes as much as the next person and hope they continue… you just won’t ever see them on a National Geographic channel.

Learning about where polar bears live was very interesting. I knew they lived somewhere cold, but I also thought they lived where penguins live. Or at the North Pole. It’s probably a good thing they don’t live in the same area, otherwise, the polar bears might hunt the penguins. Though someday they will get along.
Females of reindeer are the only members of the deer family that grow antlers! Wow! That’s new to me. Interesting and informative write up.
Though I knew they couldn’t fly a sleigh, their part of the Christmas story has always been very interesting to kids. I sure did when I was a kid. Lol.
I never even knew they are found mostly in cold areas, I always thought they would live in forests like the antelopes. Good to know.
Thanks for this.
Cheers,
Femi.
This article about polar bears was very informative. But there was no information regarding the type of food it eats or if it is a hunter like a lion.
Also, I never knew where penguins actually live. My guess was they would live somewhere like Greenland or Iceland.
I hope the effect of global warming will not affect the population of polar bears. That would just be so heart-breaking.
This was a good read.
Cheers,
Femi
Thanks for you input Femi. This article was designed as a brief overview for the very specific question of where polar bears live. Please have a look at some of the links we have included for further reading to get more information such as their diet and place on the food chain :).
Penguins actually inhabit several parts of the Southern Hemisphere, we have an article dedicated to that as well if you wish to explore the topic further.
I would think the white fur on the polar bare would be more adaptable to cold areas with snow, keeping them camouflaged better. It is interesting that penguins are found at the south pole only. I wonder why?
I have seen reports of the polar bears roaming around the outskirts of towns up north. That is scary because of the massive size of the animal. I read where the diameter of their paw measures up to 3 feet! That’s huge!
Climate change is also changing their habitat, making it harder to find food.
Thanks for the input Chas!
