How can I stop eating chocolate?  What a popular question, and for many different reasons.  Many people crave chocolate, but it really shouldn’t start to look like a main food group in your diet.

While certain types of chocolate can definitely have some health and morale benefits it is best enjoyed in moderation.  Most people enjoy some type of chocolate with so many varieties including dark, milk white, etc it comes in a wide range of flavours and strengths.

Deliciousness aside, chocolate can be a source of sugar (carbohydrates), magnesium, and caffeine among other things. This could be one of the reasons why cravings for chocolate are so common.  Not only does it taste great, but it is providing your body with something that it is looking for at the time (whether that comes in the healthiest package or not often isn’t considered when it comes to a quick energy requirement or specific nutrient that your body needs).

Minimizing Chocolate

In order to minimize your chocolate intake it can be very helpful to determine why you want it  in the first place.  If it is the quick burst of energy that your body is craving fruits can be a good source of natural sugars.  Having an alternate and sometimes slightly healthier source of easily accessible carbohydrates can help make the switch over less painful than a full on cut of sugar would.  Likewise, if your body is looking for magnesium or caffeine there are many other ways to obtain those as well.  Finally, it could have just become a habit that you have chocolate at specific times, or in certain situations.  If this is the case it may take some willpower to break the habit but it is certainly doable.  Having an alternative on hand anytime that you get into a usual chocolate situation can be helpful, as can habit stacking another activity into those situations so that rather than just eliminating the chocolate you are replacing it with something else.
